Why is UGC important?

Now that we know what UGC Is (if not read my previous blog post ‘What is UGC?’), let’s dive deeper into the importance of User Generated Content.

1) UGC can save companies A LOT of money on marketing costs & content creation costs.

Think of it like this: the company does not have to hire professional actors, filmmakers, light/sound technicians, editors, find a venue etc….

With User generated content the company hires 1 person (the UGC freelancer) who takes care of the filming/editing and the script writing. According to the website Flockler “UGC saves brands an average of $72,000 on content creation” [Sagar.J ,2024]. Since UGC is on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, if you like certain content then that content will get recommended to other users with the same interests thanks to the social media’s data collection and analytics. Not only that, when people see normal people like them praising a product, people want to take part in the moment and usually will also make videos themselves praising the product to jump on the trend and get views. Therefore, the UGC videos can be marketed to its target audience easily which can in turn, make audiences into clients which increases web traffic, sales, user engagement and brand exposure.

2) Creates trust and reliability between the brand and the consumer

User generated content is today’s form of “word of mouth” advertising. Consumers are more likely to trust UGC advertising more than branded content made by the company itself because people trust people like them (especially when it does not look like paid advertising). According to the website Linearity “92% of consumers trust reviews and testimonials more than traditional advertising.” [Solomons.M, 2023]. Social proof is a powerful tool in User generated content, it is someone else’s stamp of approval giving the prospective buyer the validation they need to buy the product. It creates trust between the brand and the consumer “UGC creators share their personal experiences and perspectives, they provide a unique and valuable perspective on products, services, and issues that is often lacking in traditional advertising.” [Elisa (2024) pg5].

“93% of marketers leveraging user-generated content in their marketing efforts claim that it performs notably better than traditional branded content” [Backlinko, 2024]
